Seniors Compete in Last Cardinal Contest

(Ann Arbor, MI) The Concordia University Football team hosted Robert Morris College in their regular season finale. It was a special day as the Cards bid farewell to their seniors: Cortez Smith, Andrew Nossaman, Beau Perry, Takari Johnson, Gabe Cox, Terrence Willburn, Robert Duff Jr., Jordan Foster, Mario Hinojoa, and Justin Roh. Entering yesterday's game, Concordia owned a 3-7 overall record while the Eagles garnished a 7-3 record.

After a Robert Morris three and out, the Cardinals were the first to get on the board. Freshman quarterback, Seth Suida (FR/Livonia, MI) led a 6 play 55-yard drive capped off with a 14-yard pass to Austin Douglass (SO/Detroit, MI). The extra point was blocked, bringing the score at 6-0.

Robert Morris answered back in their next possession with a score of their own knotting the game at 6-6.

The second quarter was a defensive struggle as neither team was able to find the end zone.

Both teams entered the third quarter with the score still at 6 apiece. On CUAA's opening possession, the Cards were able to march down to the Eagles' 32-yard line. After a pair of failed plays, Brayden Bennett (SO/Battle Creek, MI) had a 49-yard field attempt blocked.

The Eagles were able to capitalize on the miscue when Lamont Wims scored on a 1-yard run. The 2-point attempt was successful bringing the Eagle lead at 14-6. Robert Morris would tack on 3 more points in the beginning of the fourth with a 48-yard field goal.

The Cardinal offense struggled to find their groove in the second half, and was unable to get back on the scoreboard. At the end of the game, the final score was Robert Morris College 17, Concordia University 6.

Suida led the Cardinals in rushing on the day with 79 yards on 12 carries and also threw for 111 yards and 1 touchdown on 12 completions. Corey Turner (JR/Woodhaven, MI) led receivers with 86 yards by hauling in 4 catches.

Senior Takari Johnson (SR/Lansing, MI) led both teams in tackles with 15 and added 1 sack. Nick Holshoe (SO/Allegan, MI) added 10 tackles for the Cards and Ty Peterson (SO/Milan, MI) chipped in with 9 tackles and 2 sacks.

Takari Johnson currently leads all of collegiate football in total tackles and tackles for a loss in a season. Over his career he played in 35 games and amassed 213 solo tackles with 237 assists for 450 total tackles. He tallied 75.5 tackles for a loss, 23 sacks, 26 blocked passes, and recovered eight fumbles.

He currently owns all three single-game defensive records for– solo (17), assists (17) and total (27) tackles.

The Lansing native set six single-season records this season in– solo, assist and total tackles, tackles for a loss, QB sacks and caused fumbles.

Takari is the All-Time leader in solo, assist and total tackles, tackles for a loss, QB sacks and caused fumbles, and second in blocked passes.

In the NAIA Division I, Johnson ranks at – Tackles per game – 17.7 (1st), sacks per game – 1.4 (1st), total sacks – 14 (2nd), total tackles for a loss – 37.5 (1st), tackles for a loss per game – 3.80 (1st), forced fumbles per game – 0.70 (1st).

He has received honors in – Mid-East League: Defensive Player of the Year – 2013, Honorable mention – 2012, 1st team – 2013.

Gabe Cox played in 29 games and recorded 70 solo tackles with 116 assists for 186 total tackles, as well as, 15 tackles for a loss. For his career he is currently second in solo, assist and total tackles, and is top five in tackles for a loss.

Robert Duff Jr. has played in 29 games and tallied 16 solo tackles with 21 assists for 37 total tackles. He has rushed for 91 yards and hauled in nine catches for 80 yards while amassing 176 all-purpose yards. Duff also received honors in 2013 on making the All-MSFA Academic Team.

Jordan Foster played in 30 games and made 34 solo tackles with 49 assists for 83 total tackles.

Mario Hinojosa played 18 games over his career and recorded 44 solo tackles with 29 assists for 73 total tackles.

Andrew Nossaman played in 32 games. For his career he hauled in 37 catches for 346 yards and a touchdown. He scored an additional two touchdowns and gained 409 all-purpose yards. He is among the top 5 for his career in receptions and yards.

Justin Roh, who has been plagued by an injury in his senior year, has played in six games and recorded two solo tackles.

Cortez Smith played in 34 games over his career and amassed 59 solo tackles with 58 assists for 117 total tackles. The ball hawk recorded six interceptions for 24 yards and tallied 38 blocked passes. He owns the single-season record for interceptions with 3 in 2012 and is the career All-Time leader in interceptions with 6 and blocked passes with 38. Smith received honors in 2012 as an Honorable Mention on the Mid-East League.

Terrence Willburn has played in 20 games and made 13 solo tackles with 17 assists for 30 total tackles.

Concordia University would like to thank these seniors for their hard work, dedication, and passion they exhibited over the years.

The football team will be back in action shortly with their off-season workouts. CUAA will look to build off of their record setting wins season and come back strong in 2015.
