Cards Power Past Sabercats 62-0

(Watertown, WI) The Concordia University football team traveled to Watertown, Wisconsin to take on Maranatha Baptist University on Saturday. The Cards were looking to rebound after dropping a 33-3 decision the week before to Siena Heights University.

Freshman Seth Suida (FR/Livonia, MI) got his first career start at quarterback for the Cardinals and did not disappoint. In the Cards second possession of the game, the Livonia native needed three plays to find the end zone with a pass to Darionta Ross (SO/Richton Park, IL) for 48 yards.

Concordia added to their lead one drive later with a 7 play 60-yard possession capped off by a Suida pass to Corey Turner (JR/Woddhaven, MI) for 3 yards. Ashton Hundley (SO/Ypsilanti, MI) also chipped in with 20 yards on the ground throughout the Cardinal drive. Bradyen Bennett (SO/Battle Creek, MI) added the extra point for a score of 13-0.

With two minutes left on the clock in the first quarter, senior Takari Johnson (SR/Lansing, MI) continued his dominate play on defense by forcing a Sabercat fumble. The ball was recovered by Hunter Cox (SO/Laurel, MD) and taken into the end zone for 6.

Maranatha would punt to end the first quarter.

The Cardinals worked quickly in the beginning of the second quarter and found themselves on the board once more. This time Suida put in the groundwork with a 33-yard scamper to the end zone. Bennett added the extra point to bring the Cardinal lead at 27-0.

Suida added two more touchdown passes in the third on consecutive possessions to Ross and Blake Hilsabeck (FR/Flushing, MI) for 3 and 68 yards, respectively. The ensuing Cardinal drive following the Hilsabeck touchdown resulted in an Ashton Gray (SO/Detroit, MI) 10-yard touchdown run. Suida added another 16-yard touchdown run to end the scoring for the third with a Cardinal lead at 55-0.

The Cardinals would find themselves once more in the end zone in the fourth. Andrew Nossaman (SR/Bryan, OH) extended the CUAA lead with a 7-yard run; Bennett recorded the point after bringing the score to 62-0. The score would remain the same as time expired.

For the Cards on the day, Suida threw for 239 yards and 4 touchdowns on 13 completions in 19 attempts. Beau Perry (JR/Anaheim Hills, CA) rushed for 92 yards on 12 attempts with Suida gaining 79 yards and 2 scores. Ashton Gray contributed with 58 yards on the ground and 1 score. Blake Hilsabeck collected 1 reception on the day for 68 yards, Andrew Nossaman gathered 52 yards in the air on 4 catches and Darionta Ross made 2 catches for 51 yards, both catches for touchdowns.

Takari Johnson had 7 tackles on the day for the Cards with 3 sacks and one forced fumble. The Cardinal defense also hauled in four interceptions on the day with Michael Chickeral (SO/Flat Rock, MI) and Donovan Klem (SO/Orlando, FL) each making one and Thomas West (SO/Monroe, MI) tallying two.

With the win, the Cardinals improved to 3-5 on the year. CUAA will be back at home on November 1st as they host the University of Saint Francis.
