(Grand Rapids, MI) Concordia Baseball headed west to play Aquinas Saturday afternoon looking to continue their hot streak in WHAC play. The Cardinals fought hard, but unfortunately came up short in both games by scores of 5-4 and 6-1.
Game 1: Concordia 4 - Aquinas 5
Trey Acker took the mound in game one for the Cardinals. He went five innings only allowing three earned runs while also striking out three.
Aquinas got things started quickly in the bottom of the first inning as a fielder's choice brought home a run. The Cardinals responded in the third inning as Gus Simon doubled and Harrison Ryan walked to set up a sacrifice bunt from Matthew Dubrick to make the score 1-1. A home run from the Saints in the bottom of the third would put them back up 2-1.
In the fourth inning Josh Burke doubled to score Garrett Williams. Gus Simon would then double home Burke to give them their first lead of the game. A two run single from Grant Martin in the bottom of the fifth inning gave the Aquinas Saints back the lead at 4-3. Alex Piotrowski came through with a huge single in the seventh inning to bring home Justin Kozlowski to knot the game at 4. Aquinas would respond in the bottom of the seventh with a sacrifice fly to come home with the win in game one to snap CUAA's record breaking 20-game win streak.
Game 2: Concordia 1 - Aquinas 6
Aquinas came out firing in game two scoring a run in the first inning on an RBI single. They then scored two more in the second inning to go up 3-0. Their lead was extended on a sacrifice bunt in the fourth inning to go up 4-0. Kyle Hebner hit a sacrifice fly to score Justin Kozlowski in the seventh inning.
The Saints quickly fired back as they scored a run in both the seventh and eight innings to go up 6-1, and that was enough to earn the sweep on the day.
