Cardinals edged by Albion in double overtime

(Ann Arbor, MI) For the Cardinals' first home contest of the year, Concordia hosted the Albion Britons on Saturday for an out of conference matchup. Albion won their conference in 2019, and made it to the first round of the NCAA DIII playoffs. This year they came into town with a 1-1 record and were able to play toe to toe with the Cardinals. The game was close throughout, but the Britons ultimately came away victorious in double overtime, 14-13.

  • Cassandra Allard opened up the game with a score just over a minute into the game for the Cardinals. The sophomore went on to complete a hat trick for Concordia.
  • Albion answered shortly after with two goals of their own, utilizing pressure against the Cardinal clear attempts and forcing errors which converted into goals.
  • The Britons would not relinquish the lead for the rest of the first half as they were able to respond to each of Concordia's goals.
  • Greyson Papp found the back of the net three times for the Cards to score a hat trick in the first half.
  • Albion was up by four about to go into halftime, when Madisyn Fox beat the buzzer for a goal with one second remaining.
  • Concordia pulled within two after a pair of goals via Allard and Taylor Nesbitt early in the second half.
  • Right when things were looking close, the Britons bounced back with two goals of their own.
  • With just over ten minutes left in the game, Concordia evened up the match with goals from Mariana Miller, Abbey Turner, and Alyssa Lundy.
  • Once again, the Britons scored two unanswered within a minute of the game being tied.
  • Madisyn Fox stepped up in the waning minutes of the match to score two goals to deadlock the game at 13, and secure a hat trick for herself. The game was forced into overtime after Fox's clutch goals.
  • In the first overtime neither team was able to find the back of the net, despite good chances on both sides. Albion appeared to score off of a free position attempt, but the goal was called off as the pocket of Briton Chrystelle Lopez was declared illegal by the officials. Then Concordia's Alyssa Lundy had a free position attempt of her own saved by Albion's goalie. In the final seconds of the game, Cardinal goalie Amanda Archer stopped a last-ditch Briton shot to send the game into double overtime.
  • Concordia won the draw control in the second overtime, but turned the ball over before Alyssa Lundy was called for a green card, putting the Britons a player up. Albion earned a free position attempt with about a minute remaining, and Chrystelle Lopez redeemed herself with a sudden death goal to secure the Briton win.

Wednesday the Cardinals will travel to Chicago for a faceoff with Illinois Tech. Game is set for 7:00 PM.
