WHAC FIRST ROUND PREVIEW: Men's Lacrosse set to host sixth seeded Trojans

(Ann Arbor, MI) The Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) kicks off their men's lacrosse tournament on Tuesday when the Cardinals take the field against the Taylor Trojans. The Cardinals earned the third seed in the tournament after a 5-2 record in conference, making their third straight appearance in the event.

About the Trojans

Taylor finished the regular season with a 7-7 overall record, while going 2-5 within the WHAC on their way to securing the sixth seed in the tournament. The Trojans are receiving votes within the NAIA, sitting just three spots outside of the top ten with their 11 votes. Their signature win of the season thus far was a 14-13 road victory over Mount Vernon Nazarene, a team that was receiving votes at the time. In conference play, they defeated Siena Heights and UM-Dearborn, and fell in close games against Lawrence Tech and Concordia. Chad Newhard is in his sixth season at the helm for the Trojans, and sports a 28-47 record at Taylor.

 

Taylor has three players with over 30 goals on the season with Will Saxby and freshman Henry Cooper leading the team with 38 goals and Jackson Dale leading the team with 58 points and 33 goals.

 

Lucas Pacer leads the defense with 24 caused turnovers and 66 ground balls. David Celesti has been their faceoff specialist, winning 43.6% of his attempts. Ben Harrell starts in goal for Taylor, saving 53.3% of the shots he faces and allowing 12.25 goals per game.

 

About the Cardinals

Concordia took third place in the conference with a 5-2 WHAC record and 8-5 record overall. They are currently ranked 7th in the NAIA. Ty McGuire is now in his seventh season at Concordia and has a 53-37 record overall.

 

The Cardinals feature a well-balanced attack, as six players have over 30 points on the season. Cooper Regimbal leads the bunch with 47 goals and 61 points. Travis Wright is just behind him with 44 goals on the season, followed by Andrew Simmons (28), Spencer Guppy (23), Ross Preston (17), and Ryan Davis (15) who also leads the team with 19 assists.

 

Mason Blow and Josh Dues lead the team with 13 and 11 caused turnovers respectively. Gavin Scally has been the faceoff specialist for the Cards, winning 56.8% of his attempts and leading the team with 131 ground balls. Nick Bradford is second on the team with 30 GBs as a short-stick defensive midfielder. Joseph Loria has been between the pipes for the Cardinals, stopping 61.4% of the shots he faced and allowing 10.96 goals per game.

 

Previous Matchup

The Cardinals hold a 5-1 advantage in the all-time series between these two teams, with the Cardinals winning the most recent 5 meetings. This will be the first time they have met in the playoffs. The last clash between the two teams was less than two weeks ago when the Cardinals came back against the Trojans in Upland.

 

The two teams both scored three goals in the first quarter with Cooper Regimbal and Will Saxby scoring a pair early on. Taylor outscored the Cardinals 6-2 in the second quarter to take a four goal advantage into halftime, but Travis Wright was the only player to score in the third, netting a hat trick, to make it a one goal game. Cooper Regimbal contributed four goals in the fourth quarter to complete the Cardinal comeback and secure the 13-11 win. Gavin Scally controlled the faceoffs for Concordia, winning 17 of his 25 attempts. Joseph Loria recorded 11 saves in net.
