Cardinal volleyball falls in conference opener

Coming off a weekend where the Cardinals won two of their five matches, the volleyball team went from the proverbial pan into the fire as they faced one of the best conference teams in Cornerstone University. The Golden Eagles were too much for Concordia winning the match in three sets 30-13, 30-9, 30-16.
(Sept. 5, 2006 - Grand Rapids, Mich.) -- With a young team, volleyball coach Dan Kirchhoff knows he will have to let his players get valuable experience, which may not always result in victories. Such was the case Tuesday evening in Grand Rapids when the Cardinals went up against a more experienced and deeper Cornerstone University squad. The Golden Eagles made quick work of Concordia in three sets 30-13, 30-9, 30-16.
Junior Erin Walczak was the leader for the Cardinals with eight kills and 10 digs. Sophomore Erica Manning had five kills and five digs while freshman Ashley Zair added five kills and 16 digs. The team played without junior Nicole Williams, who was resting from an injury suffered during the Concordia Invitiational Tournament.
The Cardinals return to tournament action this weekend in Defiance, Ohio. Concordia will play Friday against the University of Findlay (3:00 p.m.) and Shawnee State University (7:00 p.m.). The Cardinals will take on Daemen College (9:00 a.m.) and host Defiance College (1:00 p.m.) on Saturday.
With the loss to Cornerstone, the Cardinals fall to 3-9 on the season and 0-1 in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference.
