Cardinals upset bid fall short against No. 18 Bethel

(Ann Arbor, MI) – Concordia volleyball played their second game in two days with a home game against #18 Bethel.  The Cardinals entered the game 5-7 overall while the Pilots came in 22-5 on the year.  CUAA fought hard and took the second set, but Bethel came away with a 3-1 win.

Kayla Peters led the team with 13 kills.  Hailey McCourt had a team-high 20 assists.  Tara Schatzle led the back end with 17 digs.  Kaitlin Veihl, Madalyn Lisman and Tara Drinane tied for first with 3 blocks apiece.

 

Set 1 – BU 25, CUAA 19

Kayla Peters had the first kill for Concordia, starting a 4-0 run topped off by a Tara Schatzle ace.  The first set was closely contested with Tara Drinane making a pair of kills.  Bethel slowly built up a lead and despite a combined block from Abigail Austin and Madalyn Lisman, the Pilots took set one 25-19.

 

Set 2 – CUAA 25, BU 22

Madalyn Lisman had the first kill in set 2.  Kaitlin Veihl had an ace and a kill early in the set.  Kayla Peters made back-to-back aces midway through the set and Veihl added her second ace.  Kayla Peters hammered a strong kill for a 22-19 advantage and a soft touch over the net by Kaitlin Veihl secured a 25-22 win in set 2.

 

Set 3 – BU 25, CUAA 19

Kayla Peters had the first kill in set 3.  A combined block by Hailey McCourt and Madalyn Lisman was well-placed to tie the game 7-7 with Lisman adding a go-ahead touch over the net.  Tara Drinane and Kaitlin Veihl made a key block late in the set, but Bethel used a 5-0 run to win set three 25-19.

 

Set 4 – BU 25, CUAA 15

Kayla Peters started off set 4 with a kill.  Kaitlin Veihl tied the set 4-4 and then combined with Tara Drinane for a block.  A block from Kayla Peters and Madalyn Lisman tied the game 9-9, but Bethel slowly climbed out to a double-digit lead.  Despite a late kill from Tara Drinane the Pilots took set 4 to win the match.

 

Concordia will play their third home game this week on Friday, March 12 against Aquinas at 7pm.
