Volleyball drops WHAC opener to Indiana Tech, 3-1

(Ann Arbor, MI) – The Concordia volleyball team hosted  Indiana Tech in their first WHAC match match of the year. Indiana Tech and Concordia both came into the match looking for their first win. CUAA claimed the third set after falling in the first two, but Indiana Tech was able to secure the 3-1 victory with a win in set 4.

Gabrielle den Boer led the team with 17 kills and Kayla Peters added 12. Abigail Austin had the team-high of 24 assists and Tara Schatzle added 31 digs for the Cardinals.  

Set 1 – Indiana Tech 25, CUAA 19

The Cardinals stumbled out of the game trailing 12-4, but slowly fought their way to 13-17.   The Warriors rattled off six consecutive points to increase their advantage 23-14. The Cardinals did not go away quietly rattling off five straight points to stay within reach at 23-18 and forced a timeout by the Warriors. 

Coming out of the timeout, Gabrielle den Boer secured a kill to make the score 24-19. ITU earned the final point to claim a 25-19 win in the first set. 

 

 

Set 2 – Indiana Tech 25, CUAA 21

CUAA started off the second set on the right note claiming consecutive kills by Gabrielle den Boer and Madalyn Lisman. Concordia and Indiana Tech stayed neck and neck for the majority of the beginning of the set, with the largest advantage of only four for the Cardinals (14-10, CUAA) IT stayed aggressive making a comeback and tied the game 17-17. 

The Warriors forced multiple tie scores late in the set, but CUAA continued to hang on to a 1-point lead with Nicole Evans making a solid kill for a 20-19 lead.  However, the Warriors came back and claimed set 2 by a score of 25-21.

 

Set 3 – CUAA 25, Indiana Tech 18

Gabrielle den Boer started a 3-0 run for Concordia with an opening kill in set 3.  Kayla Peters made a well-placed hit to find an open spot for a 5-2 lead.  A kill from Nicole Evans prompted an Indiana Tech timeout with an 11-6 CUAA advantage.

The Cardinals pulled ahead by double digits with a late 21-11 lead.  While the Warriors attempted a comeback, Gabrielle den Boer finished off set 3 with a kill to give CUAA a 25-18 win.

 

Set 4 – Indiana Tech 25, CUAA 21

For the third set in a row, Gabrielle den Boer recorded the opening kill.  Kayla Peters broke a 3-3 tie with a kill that dropped past the hands of the Warriors' blockers.  Nicole Evans gave the Cardinals an 8-5 advantage, but Indiana Tech used a 5-0 run to take the lead.

Gabrielle den Boer recorded back-to-back kills as the Cardinals fought back to force a 12-12 tie.  The set continued to be closely contested with Gabrielle den Boer and Kaitlin Veihl combining for a block to break a 19-19 tie.  A kill from den Boer tied the game 23-23, setting up an intense finish, but Indiana Tech claimed the final 2 points to secure the match.

Concordia will remain at home on Saturday, October 10, with another WHAC conference vs. Rochester University.  The match is set to begin at 1pm.
