Cardinals drop series to UM-Dearborn

(Chelsea, MI) Concordia women's hockey played their first series of 2020 against the Wolverines of UM-Dearborn this past weekend. The Wolverines swept the Cards, scoring 12 goals in both contests. Concordia broke the shutout in the second game with a goal scored by Isabel Hootselle in the final period.

Game 1 | Friday January 24th

UM-Dearborn 12 - Concordia 0

  • UM-Dearborn played strong defensively in the first period, not allowing Concordia to record any shots on frame.
  • Claudia Maguire scored two Wolverine goals in the first period of play and tacked on another halfway through the second for a hat trick.
  • Joining Maguire with a hat trick of her own was Brooke Spiegel who score the next three goals for the Wolverines.
  • Following Speigel's hatty, the Wolverines went on to finish off the game with another five goals for the 12-0 victory.
  • Isabel Hootselle, Adrianna Rugiero, and Kassidy Scheben each recorded three shots for the Cardinals.
  • Lizzy Knappenberger and Teagen Johnson split time between the pipes combining for 63 saves between them.

Game 2 | Saturday January 25th

UM-Dearborn 12 - Concordia 1

  • Odisoula Argyris opened up the game by scoring in the first minute of play on her way to an eventual hat trick for the Wolverines.
  • Concordia was able to have more of an offensive presence in this game, finding quality looks which were stymied by goalie Tara Peladeau.
  • UM-Dearborn scored four goals in each period on their way to a 12-1 victory.
  • It was Isabel Hootselle that found the back of the net for the Cardinals on a shot from past the right faceoff circle to break the shut out in the third.
  • Adrianna Rugiero excelled in faceoffs, winning 61% of her attempts for Concordia.
  • Once again, Johnson and Knappenberger shared time in goal, recording 56 saves together.

This weekend the Cardinals will have a home and away series with Aquinas College with the first game in Grand Rapids on Friday, January 31st and the home game taking place on February 1st. Puck drops will be at 8:00 pm and 10:30 pm respectively.
