(Ann Arbor, MI) The Concordia football team picked up their third straight win this past Saturday with a comeback win against St. Francis (IL). The Cardinals found a way to win 24-21 in overtime behind the leg of Brayden Bennett (SR/Battle Creek, MI) who sealed the win with a 35-yard field goal. After an all-around clutch kicking performance, Brayden Bennett was named Mid-States Football Association Mideast League Special Teams Player of the Week.
Bennett finished the game Saturday going 3 for 3 on PATs and 1 for 2 on field goals. With 14 seconds left in regulation, Bennett lined up for the game winning field goal from 46 yards out and made the field goal but the Fighting Saints were able to call timeout just before the ball was snapped. Bennett's second attempt from 46 after the timeout came up short eventually sending the game into overtime.
Nick Holshoe (SR/Hopkins, MI) ended the Fighting Saints first drive in overtime with an interception in the end zone. The Cardinals took over but after 3 plays and 7 yards, Coach Pries called the number of his senior kicker. Concordia sent Bennett back onto the field to attempt another game winning field goal. This time, he nailed the ball through the uprights from 35 yards away giving the Cardinals a 24-21 victory.
Bennett is currently 18 for 20 on PATs and 1 for 3 on field goals so far this season. Brayden also led the conference in extra point percentage last season going 32 for 32.
Concordia is no stranger having players honored weekly by the MSFA. Bennett joins current teammates Roderick Dailey (SO/Detroit, MI), Kaleb Pohlman (JR/Liberty Center, OH), and Andrew O'Hara (SO/Cleveland, OH) in being named MSFA Mideast League Player of the Week for their respective sides of the ball.
