Cardinal Volleyball Gains Saturday Split at Defiance Tournament
(September 13, 2008 - Defiance, Ohio) -- The Concordia volleyball team was hoping to pick up it's second tournament championship of the season as the Cardinals headed into action Saturday afternoon at the Defiance College Tournament. After winning both games Friday evening, Concordia fell in the opener Saturday morning to Dominican in five sets, before rebounding with an afternoon sweep of Huntington College to finish the weekend 3-1 to move to an 12-4 overall record on the season.
In the opener, Concordia picked up a first set 25-20 win before dropping the next two sets to Dominican University. The Cardinals held on a spectacular fashion in the fourth set by the slimmest of margins with a 27-25 win, but had little steam left in the deciding set as the fell 15-8 sending Concordia to a consolation game.
The Cardinals wasted little time as they chopped down the Foresters of Huntington College in straight sets to even their record on the day and continue the trend of winning at least three matches in all three of their tournaments on the season.
After winning the first game by the same score they won game on against Dominican (25-20), the Cards had to battle to the end to give themselves a 2-0 cushion as they held off Huntington with a 26-24 victory. The third set was, for the most part, all Concordia as the Cardinals cruised to a 25-16 win to sweep the match.
The Cardinals (12-4 overall) will be off until next weekend when they head back to Ohio, this time the eastern portion, to participate in the Pioneer Tournament at Malone College in North Canton.
