Season Preview: Men's Basketball embarks on 2020-21 campaign

(Ann Arbor, MI) – Concordia men's basketball is hard at work preparing to begin the 2020 season.  The Cardinals will look for continued improvement as 4 seniors lead a deep roster that will look to move up the WHAC conference standings this year.  Head coach Ricky Yahn will be entering his 8th year at the helm of the program.

 

2019 Season Review

Concordia finished 9-21 overall last year with a 5-15 mark in WHAC conference play.  The team began the year 2-0 after defeating St. Clair College and Wright State-Lake.  The Cardinals opened WHAC conference play by defeating rival Siena Heights.  CUAA earned a third-place finish at the Concordia Invitational Tournament with a 67-66 win over Concordia-Chicago. 2020 Schedule Outlook

Concordia will officially begin the 2020 season with a road game at Taylor on October 24.  The Cardinals finish the month of October with their home opener against Grace on October 28.

In November, the team will host Great Lakes Christian and Goshen before traveling to Rochester on November 14 to begin WHAC conference play.  After a road match at Ohio Christian, CUAA will host Lawrence Tech and Trinity International to conclude November games.

A rivalry game at Siena Heights opens the new month on December 2.  The Cardinals will host another conference foe in Madonna on December 5.  CUAA travels to Grace Christian and then hosts Ohio Christian on December 18 before the Christmas holiday.  The final game before the new year will be a home contest against Spring Arbor on December 30.

Concordia will play 8 WHAC games in January, starting with a road match at Indiana Tech on January 6.  The team hosts Aquinas and Lourdes before traveling to Cornerstone.  After a home game against UNOH, the Cardinals travel to Lawrence Tech, Aquinas, and Madonna to finish the month.

The month of February begins with Concordia hosting rival Siena Heights on February 3.  The Cardinals will remain at home with games against Rochester and Indiana Tech before traveling to the UNOH and Lourdes.  The team's final regular season game will come on February 20 against Cornerstone.

If the Cardinals finish among the top 8 teams in the WHAC, they will qualify for the postseason tournament.

 

Concordia Personnel

Head coach Ricky Yahn features a total of 19 players on the 2020-21 squad.  Senior Thomas Hronis returns after scoring 185 points and featuring a 3-point field goal percentage of .421 (48-114).  Senior Tyler Black is back after recording 161 points and 65 rebounds last year.  Senior CJ Moore will provide additional leadership for the team.

Junior Jordan Winowiecki will be another important part of the offense, scoring 210 points last year and going 43-125 (.344) from behind the arc.  Junior Bernard Kasanda will be another key returner, notching 113 points and 65 rebounds last year.  Junior Matt Lockhart contributed with 132 points and 92 rebounds last season.  Junior Colton Ritsema played well in the post last year, recording 84 points and 55 rebounds.

Nine newcomers will be joining the Concordia roster this year, including junior transfers Aaron Patterson, Anthony Condie, and Jaedyn Carter.
