Senior Shawna Dorton
(October 2, 2008 - Ann Arbor, Mich.) -- When a team is struggling every loss seems that much larger and such can be the case Thursday evening to the Concordia volleyball team. Coming in on a seven-game losing streak, the Cardinals faced a team in Davenport that they had never lost to in four matches and felt pretty good that they would return to the win column. But the visiting Panthers rallied to win the last two sets and headed home with a 3-2 victory. Shawna Dorton (Sr. - Lincoln Park, Mich.) continues to put together an incredible week as she finished with 20 kills, following a 17-kill performance Tueday.
Concordia (12-12, 0-5 WHAC) had easy work in the first set as they rambled to a 25-15 victory. But Davenport showed their passion as they battled the Cardinals in a nip-and-tuck affair in the second set as the Panthers edged Concordia 29-27 to even the match.
Dorton had 12 kills after the first two matches, with Erica Manning (Sr. - St. Johns, Mich.) adding eight herself.
Concordia had to fend off another furious rally in the third set and prevailed by the bare minimum as the Cardinals took a 2-1 lead after a 25-23 win in the third set. Sarah Iverson (So. - Grass Lake, Mich.) lead Concordia with six kills in the set, while Megan Vanderhyde had nine for the Panthers. Shilo Stewart (Jr. - Brighton, Mich.) had nine digs with Rachel Heaton (Fr. - Plymouth, Mich.) and Danielle Guss (Fr. - Lambertville, Mich.) added eight and seven, respectively.
The Cardinals unfortunately played their worst set of the night in the fourth, and Davenport took full advantage winning 25-18 to force a fifth and deciding set. The final set had all the drama you'd expect and neither team would give in easily to the other. But when the dust settled, the Panthers picked up the win to improve to 7-15 overall and 1-3 in the WHAC.
Dorton finished with 20 kills and foru block assists for Concordia while three others surpassed the 10-kill plateau: Ashley Hart (Fr. - Birmingham, Mich.) had a dozen with Iverson and Manning adding 11.
Ashley Zair (Jr. - West Bloomfield, Mich.) had 52 assists and 14 digs. Stewart lead the defensive effort with 26 digs, with Heaton and Guss each adding 18.
The Cardinals now look to a tournament for a chance to re-focus and came back strong through the last month of the 2008 season. Concordia will be spending the weekend in Grand Rapids at the Cornerstone Invitational.
